Variety is the spice of life.

The value of working on both commercial and editorial photography projects

When working with a diverse array of clients, I find that the narratives that emerge naturally have editorial qualities. Editorial-style photography within commercial projects helps create a narrative that goes beyond selling a product or service. Diversity in clients and assignments not only enhances the artistic aspect of my work but also plays a pivotal role in the dynamic crossover between my commercial and editorial photography. The beauty of this intersection lies in its ability to tell authentic, compelling stories that resonate with a wide audience while maintaining the commercial objectives of a brand. On the editorial side, the commercial work pushes creativity and makes me look for more artful and creative photographs even in the most mundane situations.

When working with a variety of clients, I find that the narratives that emerge naturally have editorial qualities. These stories often transcend the boundaries of mere advertising and become a reflection of the real world. A photograph that captures the essence of a local timber framer, for instance, can seamlessly transition from a commercial brand campaign to an editorial feature, blurring the lines between promotional content and visual storytelling. Blurring those lines in a good way, and in a manner that focuses on the story and less on the hard sell.

The crossover is particularly evident in today’s marketing landscape and photographic narratives, where consumers are not just buyers but also seekers of meaningful connections. Editorial-style photography within commercial projects helps create a narrative that goes beyond selling a product or service. It engages the audience on a deeper level, fostering a sense of relatability.

Incorporating diverse perspectives in this crossover is like adding layers to a narrative. It’s about more than just showcasing a product; it’s about showcasing the people behind the product, the communities they serve, and the impact they have. This nuanced storytelling approach not only resonates with consumers but also strengthens the brand’s identity, making it more memorable and emotionally appealing.

The editorial-commercial crossover allows for greater flexibility and adaptability in my work. A set of images created for a commercial campaign can seamlessly transition into editorial content for a magazine or online feature. This versatility not only maximizes the reach of my work but also underscores the interconnectedness of various storytelling mediums in the modern visual landscape.

In essence, the synergy between commercial and editorial photography fueled by diverse clients and perspectives creates a powerful narrative that transcends the traditional boundaries of marketing. It transforms photography into a storytelling tool that not only sells products but also communicates the values, diversity, and authenticity of the brands and individuals I have the privilege to collaborate with.
